Go on an expedition
This Will Change You Forever
Experience what happens when clean water changes an entire community – and witness it firsthand.
Serve together. Grow together. Come home forever changed.
Most people who go say they came expecting to help others –
and left transformed themselves.
Imagine spending your vacation this year not just together, but on purpose. Sharing. Loving. Growing. Hand-in-hand with local villagers whose lives will never be the same because you showed up.
Serve together. Grow together. Come home forever changed.
From meaningful service and deep connection to adventure, laughter, and unforgettable moments – this is the kind of experience families talk about for years afterward.
You’ll work alongside local communities on sustainable, village-driven projects focused on long- term impact.
Transportation, lodging, meals, and on-the-ground coordination are handled by experienced teams.
Many participants come as families and leave with memories and relationships that last a lifetime.

Named the “Pearl of Africa,” Uganda is home to the Nile River and is considered among the top 20 most beautiful countries in the world. Family Humanitarian expeditioners will travel to Mbale and work in villages near the Kenya border. The scenery is breathtaking, and the people are warm, welcoming, and lovely.
No current public expeditions, but private groups are welcome to inquire and schedule.
The Ghanaian saying, “Akwaaba” (meaning “welcome”), perfectly reflects the country’s warm and welcoming people. Ghanaians are known for their friendliness, hospitality, and for being easygoing and welcoming to outsiders. Ghana is home to over 100 different ethnic groups, each with its own language, customs, and traditions. Family Humanitarian expeditioners fly to Tamale to work in the poorer Northern Region.
Trip Details
Participants often invite friends and family to be part of the impact – and are surprised by how quickly it comes together.
“Family Humanitarian expeditions are designed to be exhausting, exhilarating, and unforgettable. You’ll love deeper, work harder, and learn more than you ever thought possible. While attempting to change the life of someone else, you’ll undoubtedly change your own.“
Michaela Shirley | Executive Director, FH

We want you to feel fully prepared.
We do not build trips around volunteers. We build trips around our existing long-term relationships, sustainable clean water projects, and local leadership already serving their communities. Participants are not coming to “save” communities. Instead, they witness transformation, build relationships, learn from local people, and help support meaningful long-term impact. They bring love, hope, and funding to the projects that are continuously being completed. Our program is designed to create independence, and following sound humanitarian principles is a top priority. We have a strict no-gifting policy.
Yes. Participant safety is taken very seriously. We work with trusted local partners, vetted hotels, experienced drivers, and structured itineraries. Participants travel together as a group and are guided throughout the experience by our expedition leaders and by our local, native teams.
Not all participants pay for their entire trip themselves. Many invite friends, family, coworkers, and supporters to be part of the impact. Some use corporate donation matching contributions. We also provide a complete fundraising toolkit and support system to help participants every step of the way.
For those who wish to fundraise for their trip, participants generally register first, learn more about the experience, and then begin fundraising afterward. We help guide participants through the process. All that is required upon application is your $500/person deposit.
The week is a unique blend of meaningful impact, relationships, adventure, reflection, and unforgettable experiences. Participants visit communities receiving clean water, celebrate alongside local families, experience the culture firsthand, and participate in meaningful building projects. We strive to provide a variety of projects and not overload the group with physical labor. You can find sample itineraries for Uganda here and Ghana here.
No special experience is required. You do not need humanitarian, construction, fundraising, medical, or international travel experience. You simply need an open heart and willingness to participate.
Participants stay in comfortable, vetted hotels and lodges throughout the trip. We prioritize safety, cleanliness, comfort, and quality service. Accommodation expectations should be managed as there is not usually air conditioning, there will be running water and flushing toilets, but water may be limited or cold, and internet access will likely be limited.
Most people are able to participate comfortably. Some days involve walking, village visits, long travel times, and warm weather, but the trip is not designed as an extreme physical challenge.
Absolutely. Many participants join expeditions on their own. Groups tend to become very close throughout the week, and participants often leave feeling like family.
Participants come from a wide variety of ages and backgrounds, including young adults, families, professionals, retirees, and parents with children and older teens. We recommend that participants are at least 8 years of age, however, we leave that up to the parent’s discretion. We have had many younger children come and do quite well.
What makes these expeditions unique is the combination of real sustainable impact that supports ongoing, year-round, robust, village-driven projects, deep human connection, cultural immersion, and transformational experiences. Participants do not simply observe the work or work on a trip-based project. We have full-time teams in these locations. You will witness moments that stay with you forever and be involved with projects that have a long-term impact!
Family Humanitarian strives to keep the expedition costs as low as possible. Expedition fees are used to directly support the expedition projects as well as in-country expenses for each participant, including ground transportation, food, and lodging. Approximately half of the fee goes toward personal expenses, and the remaining half goes toward expedition projects. For Uganda, the safari is also a significant portion of the cost.
Family Humanitarian has a strict no-gifting policy. While select items may be donated to the community at large (to be cleared through Family Humanitarian), individual gifts of food, candy, toys, clothing, etc. are strongly discouraged. Items that foster interactive experiences, such as bubbles, nail polish, and sports equipment to play together, are encouraged. These items should not be given to individuals.

All expeditioners will need a passport for travel outside the United States. Please make sure that the expiration date is at least 6 months after the date of your return.
A visa is also required for travel to the African countries where we serve. We will help you with the details of the application process. In Kenya, their version of the visa is called an eTA. We will also help you with that application. Expect to spend about $100 on these travel documents.
The yellow fever vaccination is required to enter most countries in Africa, and proof will be required to obtain your VISA. Yellow Fever vaccinations generally cost $250-$300, and last for a lifetime. We also recommend that you are current on all of your routine vaccinations. Other vaccinations may be suggested by your local health department. These vaccinations are totally optional and up to your personal discretion and comfort level. Please also be aware that it will be necessary to obtain a prescription for an antibiotic to prevent contracting malaria. Fees for obtaining vaccinations and antibiotics are not included in your expedition fee and are your responsibility.
The hardest part may simply be believing you can actually do it.
